why sea glass?
I’ve always felt a strong connection with all things ocean. There is no happier place for me than sitting in the sun, listening to the peaceful harmony of waves crashing on the shore. A fascination with sea glass was born when my mother-in-law introduced me to the practice of “beachcombing” for these objects, or as I lovingly think of it as: “Treasure Hunting.” She explained to me that a glass object that was discarded into the ocean (bottles, windows, lights, etc) breaks up into small shattered pieces. Over a long period of time, the waves and the sand change and shape the piece of glass into a smooth, beautiful colored pebble, which washes up onto the beach to be found.
This concept resonated with me on so many levels. I have come to think of that process as a metaphor for therapy. Going through the process of change and coming out the other side as something all-together different. A treasure. Adversities and experiences shape us into the people we are, and will become. Therapy can be one of those waves which change us for the better and help us become the treasure we dream of being. This is how Sea Glass Counseling got its name.
